Washburn University women’s basketball team went up against Arkansas Fort Smith Lions on Thursday, Feb. 12, ending the game with a score of 85-70, at Lee Arena.
The first quarter started out with a turnover and secured the first three points of the game at eight minutes and 26 seconds, followed by a sub-out 15 seconds before the end of the first quarter, resulting in a secured lead in the game of 25 points.
“I think we were really intentional on our defense and that kind of thing. I still think we can do a little bit better on that. But, yeah, I thought it was good,” said senior guard Payton Sterk.
Sterk held a total point score of 7-15 and a three-pointer score of 4-8, carrying the Ichabods forward to winning against the Lions with a layup near the end of the final quarter.
“I think halftime was really critical for us. It was a little back and forth in the first half. So I think going into the third we just emphasize how important it was the first five minutes of the game. And I think just knowing that we can do it, and it may be a little rough, but we know how to get the job done,” said senior guard Aniah Wayne.
Wayne held an identical score for both her total shots and three-pointers of 6-9. Wayne also held a big role in Washburn’s win, securing a defensive rebound three minutes away from the end of the game.
Head coach Lora Westling praised the women’s team for their success and skills in maintaining their winning score.
“We got to tighten up the perimeter a little earlier, defensively. [I told] them to get their heads up earlier. But thankfully, our shooters came to shoot as well. So again, this time of year, you just got to be super solid and find a way to win and we did that as a team tonight,” Westling said.
The Washburn Ichabods Women’s Basketball team is set to play again Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. against Northeastern State in the pink-out game.
