On Feb. 28, Washburn University competed against Missouri Southern and secured a win of 84-74 to close out the regular season.
Washburn used a series of 3-pointers and a strong second-half run to secure its 29th consecutive win, setting a school record at home games. The Ichabods now prepare to open the MIAA postseason tournament on Friday, March 6, against an opponent to be announced.
“Brady Christensen, a senior who made big plays. We needed him and made some big shots. I’m really happy for him. He’s been a warrior for us. And Jack Bachelor was terrific, 26 points and 9 assists with no turnovers. Jack was the best guard on the court tonight” said head coach Brett Ballard. “These guys [players] have been a joy to coach, really grateful for what they’ve given us so far. It’s been a heck of a journey and now we just have to keep getting better and stay in the moment.”
After trailing 10-7, the Ichabods used a 20-4 run to take control. The Lions tied the game at 41 but Washburn finished the half with a 7-2 run and led 48-43 at the break.
Ballard explained the team’s defense was not strong during the game. He said that they stopped trapping ball screens and began switching on defense which helped them get enough stops in the second half. The opposing team used a different defensive approach by leaving some players unguarded, something they had not seen before, so they had to adjust during the game. He added that the team scored enough points and that their late run in the second half played an important role in the win.
“They came at us with a different defense that we’ve seen. We adjusted our defense, stepped up when we needed to and dudes made big shots,” said senior forward Brady Christiansen. “I couldn’t be more happy to win on senior night and just excited for what we’ve done. But we’re not done yet and excited for what’s next. Four years went by fast. It probably won’t sit in for a couple of days but I’m just extremely grateful for everyone that’s been a part of my journey. This team has been special and hopefully we’ll get to host the region and get more home games.”
Washburn Ichabods opened the second half strong, extending the lead before Missouri Southern Lions cut it to 59-58. Washburn then went on a 25-9 run to secure an 84-74 win.
Bachelor said the team stayed focused and did not lose momentum, even during difficult moments. He explained that they have been in similar situations before and followed a “next play” approach.
“We took a lot of blows but we gave a final punch. I was pretty good and I was proud of our team for how we fought and came together” said junior guard Jack Bachelor. “Coaches do a great job of watching films, giving pointers and whatever we need. Like I said, just communicating and making sure we’re getting better each …. and playing as hard as I can for those seniors one last time here.”
Bachelor led with 26 points and 9 assists, Christiansen and Jones each added 18 points and Bryson Smith scored 13.
Bachelor said he is focused on the current season, especially as the team moves into March. He shared that he is proud of how the team finished the regular season and emphasized staying focused as they prepare for the upcoming month.
Washburn Ichabods secured the top seed in the postseason tournament by winning their second straight regular season championship, finishing with an MIAA record of 18-1. Central Missouri Mules earned the No. 2 seed at 14–5. Both teams are set to play their first tournament games on Thursday, March 5.
