On Wednesday, Feb. 25, the Ichabods secured a victory of 71-56 against the Gorillas. The Ichabods moved up in the rankings, preparing them for their last home game this Saturday against Missouri Southern.
The Ichabods had to adjust their game plan against Pittsburg State. The Ichabods were going to see what the Gorillas would try to do against them in the early game. Giving up too many threes in the first half, but then got a good feel for what Pittsburg State was trying to do, then Washburn was able to make the adjustments in that time. Head coach Lora Westlings was proud of her group.
Assistant coach Robin Stahl read the scouting report for Missouri Southern and has been reviewing it for the past week. Westlings feels like the staff is ready to go, and the assistants have done such a good job in making sure that they are able to focus on the next game.
Coach Westling thinks “the team will enjoy this one tonight,” but she feels that they will be completely locked in for this Saturday.
The Ichabods are also lucky to secure a spot in the upcoming MIAA tournament that will be held in Kansas City. They are looking at securing a seed.
Westling hopes to secure either the No. 3 seed or No. 4 seed coming into the tournament.
Senior guard Gabi Giovannetti thought that their fight was really good. Despite being down at halftime, they knew that’s not how they wanted to defend in the first half, but came out in the second half to take over against Pittsburgh State.
Giovannetti said “it was a good team effort,” and sophomore guard Brooke Gomez was really good coming out of the third.
Senior guard Aniah Wayne had a total of 11 points for the night, including two crucial 3-pointers in the second half that helped her team secure a 71-56 victory over Pittsburgh State.
Wayne emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum through both offense and defense, as well as highlighted the significance of working as a team. Wayne played 22 minutes on the court, reflecting on the amount of time she had on the court.
“It made my vision more open to learn if any mistakes were made that game and how we as a team can reflect on that as well and make it flow smoother so there are fewer mistakes in the upcoming game against Missouri Southern,” Wayne said.
With the Ichabods 71-56 victory over the Gorillas, it moves them to 20-7 on the season. Now facing their last home game against Missouri Southern, Washburn will look to continue its momentum into the upcoming game this Saturday as it nears an end.
