Washburn University women’s basketball swept the court Friday, Nov. 21, with a 70-47 win over the Southwest Baptist University’s Bearcats. With their first game in the new and improved Lee Arena, the Ichabods were dribbling on new floors for the win.
The Ichabods started strong, securing the jump ball and gaining a seven point lead before the Bearcats gained two points with five minutes left in the first quarter. While the Bearcats pushed, the Ichabods ended the first quarter with a 12 point lead.
“We’re really fortunate to have such a deep team and talented team,” said senior center Yiibari Nwidadah.
Nwidadah had a strong offensive game, scoring 19 of the team’s overall 70 points. With an efficient shooting of 8-9 and 8 rebounds, Nwidahwah drove through the opposing Bearcats.
“She [Nwidadah] was amazing. She’s obviously always dominant, and I just love having such an efficient and amazing post. I just can’t say enough good stuff about her,” said senior guard Gabi Giovannetti.
Giovannetti was just behind Nwidadah, with 13 points and 7 rebounds.
The team’s overall debut in Lee Arena was well-received by Ichabod women’s basketball head coach Lora Westling.
“We’ve been challenging them in five specific areas, and we saw attempts in those areas to improve right off the bat…We’ve talked a lot about making sure we’re not chasing results, but we’re chasing that process of things and getting better at a couple things, and then letting results come from that. So I was excited about that,” Westling said.
With a final score of 70-47, the Ichabods started the Washburn Classic on a high note and kept up that momentum through the tournament.
