Ichabods win close contest against University of Central Oklahoma

Johnson swishes his fourth free throw of the night when a Central Oklahoma foul sends him to the line for two shots. The Bronchos entered the double-bonus with five minutes left in the game.

The starting five consisting of Michael Keegan, junior guard, Andrew Orr, junior forward, Brady Christiansen, sophomore forward, Jarmell Johnson, sophomore guard and Ungashick talk about their game plan in the final second before they take the court. The Ichabods won the jump ball but were unable to convert on the possession.

Jake Schadegg, junior guard, zeros in on defense against the Broncho’s point guard. The Ichabod’s defense was able to force the Bronchos into nine turnovers throughout the game.

After an early Washburn foul, Byrd lines up next to his opponent while a Central Oklahoma player shoots two free throws. Both free throws were good, putting the Ichabods down by three points at the midpoint of the first half.

Orr attempts to block a Central Oklahoma layup. He was unsuccessful and the Broncho’s, Luke Haasl, scored on the possession giving the Bronchos a 19-17 lead.

Byrd guards a Central Oklahoma player as the ball comes down the court. Byrd grabbed two defensive rebounds in the first half to contribute to the team’s total of 12 in the same half.

In an attempt to block a shot from Central Oklahoma, Keegan takes a hit underneath the Broncho’s basket. The shot was missed keeping the game tied 44-44 at the 12-minute mark of the second half.

Keegan looks to pass the ball to a teammate while under soft defensive pressure from Central Oklahoma. Keegan was able to find Ungashick on the perimeter producing an assist for himself earlier in the game.

Washburn’s go-to point guard, Ungashick, motions for his teammates to set up a play. The play was executed, allowing Ungashick to score and cutting the Central Oklahoma lead to 52-54.

Orr pulls up in the lane for a short jump shot. He contributed six points for the Ichabods as he ended the night with a 50 percent field goal completion rate.

Keegan and Ungashick turn to box out their opponents to get in position to grab a defensive rebound. The Ichabods were able to secure 28 defensive boards throughout the night.

Ready to receive a pass from Ungashick, Keegan sets up for a shot. Keegan was the second-highest scorer on the night for Washburn with 15 points.

In between possessions, Johnson, Byrd and Brayden Shorter, freshman guard, talk about the previous minutes of the game. The trio played a total of 33 minutes for the Ichabods.

Orr, Jack Bachelor, freshman guard, Keegan, Ungashick and Christiansen wait for the referees to settle a discrepancy between the two teams. The call ruled in Washburn’s favor giving the Ichabods the ball in the final seconds of the game and a 75-68 win over Central Oklahoma.

Emmanuel Byrd, sophomore forward, wishes teammate Sam Ungashick, sophomore guard, good luck as the starting lineups are being announced. Ungashick played 34 minutes and put up 16 points during the game.
