Washburn’s volleyball team scores the first point every set and is able to keep a stable lead throughout the match to win.

For the first time this year the Newman University Jets came to Washburn for a game. The Ichabods played against the Jets less than twenty four hours after playing another game. Even with hardly any time to prepare or recover, the team still triumphed over Newman University.

Newman University started the match off with a serve to Washburn, but the Ichabods were able to return it and gain the first point. After an ace from Washburn and a service error from the Jets, the Ichabods secured a lead of 10-5. Washburn closed out the set having the ball deflect off the defenses, ending the first set 25-14.

The second set began with a serve and point for the Ichabods. Washburn’s middle hitter Allison Maxwell had two blocks that turned into a few points for the Ichabods as well. Berg had two blocks of her own that made points for the Ichabods. Washburn finished the second set with a challenge on the referees call, earning them the point and ending the set 25-10 in Washburn’s favor.

Washburn started the third set firm and ready to end the match against Newman University with an early 3-1 lead. Berg found a hole in the defense after a long point and slammed it into the back of the court. This was Berg’s 1,000th career goal. The Ichabods finished with a 25-21 total for the third set, shutting down the Jets in a 3-0 match.

Berg, a health and fitness motion major, plays as an outside hitter for the Ichabods. She played a great game and thinks that this week’s wins will put the team in a good mindset for their next.

“It’s good, playing any game in this conference is a good win, but we have to take care of one game at a time. So, taking care of this game is good and will get us going to the next week,” said Berg.

Number eight Allison Maxwell is an exercise science and rehab major and an outside hitter for Washburn volleyball. Maxwell was thrilled to win against a team like the Newman University Jets.

“It was a good win to have, especially later in the season. It’s good to just get more wins under our belt going into conference tournament,” said Maxwell.
