Washburn University has introduced a new resource to strengthen student learning: free on-demand tutoring through Tutor.com. Available to all students immediately, this service provides 24/7 academic support in more than 250 subjects and is accessible from any internet-connected device.
Through Tutor.com, Washburn students can connect one-on-one with highly qualified tutors for real-time help across a wide range of disciplines. Subjects include mathematics, sciences, business, English, writing and history as well as advanced areas such as statistics, accounting and economics. With more than 3,000 tutors available, students can receive timely assistance whenever challenges arise, even in the middle of the night.
The platform extends beyond traditional tutoring. Students may drop off essays for written feedback, revisit recordings of past tutoring sessions and take diagnostic quizzes to assess strengths and weaknesses. Tutor.com also includes instructional videos, practice lessons and personalized study resources that students can use independently. For added consistency, students have the option to save favorite tutors and view their schedules of availability.
“Online tutoring is flexible and powerful, but I’ve noticed students still prefer face-to-face help for certain subjects,” said Smera Shrestha, student math tutor. “The great thing about Tutor.com is it fills the gap, students get support anytime and then they can come to us in person if they want to dig even deeper.”
Steve Hageman, director of First Year Experience, emphasized that while Washburn faculty do not directly shape Tutor.com’s content, the partnership expands opportunities far beyond what earlier tutoring services could provide.
“This version of Tutor.com has far more advanced classes, wider tutoring options, and features like flashcards, learning games and test prep resources that we simply didn’t have before,” Hageman said.
Tutor.com further supports students preparing for standardized and professional exams. Integrated test preparation includes GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, and NCLEX-RN resources through The Princeton Review complete with practice questions, detailed score reports and study guidance. Career readiness is also emphasized: students can access resume and cover letter reviews, practice interview tools and career planning resources, ensuring support extends beyond coursework into professional development.
“I used Tutor.com for resume feedback, and I got the review back in less than 12 hours,” said Utsav Poudel, senior computer information sciences major. “They caught details I hadn’t noticed, and the fast turnaround meant I could update my resume before a deadline.”
Accessing the service is straightforward. Students log into D2L, select the Student Resource Center, navigate to Class Support and then open the Tutoring & Writing Center. A link there connects directly to the Tutor.com portal. Before beginning a session, students are encouraged to enter their questions or key details in the pre-session form to ensure their tutoring time is focused and effective.
After each session, students can return to the recording at any time or continue working with tutors they found especially helpful. The combination of real-time support, self-guided tools and career resources creates a comprehensive academic service designed to meet students’ needs at every stage of their education.
Hageman noted that the long-term measure of success will be student engagement.
“What you’ll probably see is, as some people start to use it, they’ll share with their friends and folks who they know [because] they’re getting benefit from it,” Hageman said. “Over time, the number of students using it will increase, and at the end of the day, our best metric is going to be student usage rates and maybe return usage rates, how often students come back because they found it helpful.”
For assistance or further information, students can contact Tutor.com directly at Contact Tutor.com or reach out to Washburn’s tutoring staff at [email protected]. With this addition, Washburn University demonstrates its commitment to student success by ensuring that high-quality academic support is available at any hour of the day.
