Brief: New Family Park Opening in Topeka
By: Madison Dean
A new family park is set to open up in Topeka thanks to significant public interest and input. Through the help of HTK Architects, Shawnee County Parks and Recreation has released a draft master plan.
According to the draft master plan, the park will have a destination playground, a golf clubhouse, an overlook mound, a bicycle pump track, a fitness playground and a great lawn. The new family park will be located at SW 21st and Urish.

I’ve lived here for 72 years. Why don’t they put a swimming pool in to go with the things that are there, which isn’t much. I love a couple of miles from there and when my grandkids come to town, we go to the North Aquactic Center, as it’s so much nicer.

I totally agree with Amanda. I helped to get signatures to put this on our ballots to vote on this park. Nine out of ten people I talked with were not in favor of this project and that included the ones who lived in the area. They did not want more traffic on Urish and did not see a need for the park also. It needs to be voted on. I do not see how a few commissioners can make that decision using our taxpayers money. They do not want it on the ballot because they know that the majority in Topek will vote against it. If we would have been given one more week to get signatures , it would have been put to a vote !!

Urish? Again? Seriously? SNCO, you all do realize there’s more to Topeka than just Urish right?
