Washburn prepares to host the Central Missouri Mules next Friday at Yager Stadium following the 1-1 draw. The team’s five-game winning streak came to an end, but their unbeaten run continues.
The Washburn women’s soccer team played against Rogers State University to a 1-1 tie at Yager Stadium on Oct.19.
Head coach Davy Phillips explained how the teams performed during the game.
“I think that the goal took away and changed everything,” Phillips said. “I think if we go up 1-0, we can sit on the lead a little bit differently and we can play in different areas of the field.”
Phillips further explained his team strategy.
“Once we start opening up chasing the game, they get to protect their lead. So, I think generally they executed the game plan. It’s just the first goal that has such an impact on soccer games, and the girls did really well to fight back to get the draw.”
Senior midfielder Belle Kennedy shared the thing that she learned from the game.
“One thing I’ve learned is optimism,” Kennedy said. “I tend to get really frustrated and take my anger out towards other people. Also, I learned that I like to yell a lot and I try to let people know that I’m yelling at them more so that they can hear when it gets so intense, because people tune out a lot of other voices, rather than yelling at them out of frustration.”
Freshmen midfielder Lydia Keller talked about the game and her overall performance.
“We had a ton of shots on goal and it’s just one of those games we just couldn’t finish,” Keller said. “I think we learned how to fight through adversity and how to grow as a team and even the hardships to just keep going.”
Washburn will begin MIAA play on Friday night, Oct. 24 with a road matchup against University of Central Missouri. The kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Yager Stadium. For more information about the game, students can visit the official Washburn Athletics website.
