The Washburn women’s soccer team earned its second win on Sunday afternoon, defeating Ouachita Baptist University 1-0 at Yager Stadium.
Senior defender Shaye Taylor scored the only goal of the match late in the first half. In the 42nd minute, she stepped up for a free kick just outside the box and sent a shot into the upper corner of the net, giving the Ichabods a 1-0 lead. Taylor’s goal was her first of the season.
“I think it was an intense game,” Taylor said. “We know that Sunday games are a little bit harder mentally, so we had to come out with a strong mental choice. And I think it was there, but we needed more of it. And so I think as the game grew, it got better. There were some uneasy moments, but it got better and we grew and we obviously got the result we wanted after pushing through some hard battles.”
The Ichabods continued to succeed in the second half, keeping the ball in Ouachita’s half and applying pressure throughout. Washburn added five more shots and three corner kicks while holding the Tigers to only two attempts that didn’t trouble the goal.
Davy Phillips, head women’s soccer coach, summarized the key points from the match, highlighting both the positives and the areas that need improvement.
“I think for me, it’s just the consistency we’ve shown […] a high level of comprehension in all areas of the game at various times of the season,” Phillips said. “So far, it’s just connecting all of those areas for a consistent effort every time we come out. And so that’s the biggest thing. The growth and the understanding of the concepts have been really good. Now it’s like a consistent application that the team needs to improve on.”
Freshman goalkeeper Lili Everley shared her view of the game’s progression.
“I think today was just really about putting all the things we’ve been working on in practice into the game,” Everley said. “I think we definitely had a rocky start, and we’re playing very reactively from all 11 people in the field. Really good shot by Shaye to put us on the board and kind of give us that cushion. But in the second half, I think we played a whole lot better. Everybody doing their jobs, working on the things, executing what we work on every single day in training and really leaning into our identity.”
Washburn will begin MIAA play on Friday night, Sept. 26 with a road matchup against Fort Hays State. The kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Hays, KS. For more information about the game, you can visit the official Washburn Athletics website.
