On Sept. 13, a volleyball match was held between Washburn and Newman at Whiting Fieldhouse from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
In the first set, Washburn established control early and maintained momentum throughout. The set concluded with Washburn scoring 25 points, while Newman finished with 10 points.
In the second set, Washburn continued to perform strongly, while Newman began to establish some rhythm. Washburn committed a few service errors during the set, but still secured the win with a final score of 25 –16.
“We’re missing too many serves, 10 today, 13 last night. You know, one of these days it’s going to get us,” said Chris Herron, head volleyball coach.

However, the home team still played well and won the second set.
“Teams here are pretty good, so we just want to have the right mentality going into every game and so that we know we can win every game,” said junior outside hitter/middle blocker Natalie Hedlund.
Finally, the third set was pretty intense. Both the teams were playing the match as tooth and nail and the spectators were all standing to get a more intense view. Both teams were giving their best, the substitute players were cheering their teams and boosting their morale. As the final whistle blew, all the audience were standing and cheering for the winning team. The score for the third and the final set was 25-20 points.
Senior middle hitter Austin Broadie was the game’s star player and the MVP of the match.
“I think my focus is blocking, just getting more stuff, blocks and touches, not getting told that sort of thing. So that’s kind of what I’m trying to focus on in practice, in games and stuff,” Broadie said.
