Washburn kicks off Homecoming with Rising Stars event

Samuel Pollom, representing Lunch Buddies, does seven reps of one-handed pushups while solving a Rubik’s Cube. Pollom took home the first place win for Rising Stars and has been to 21 Rubik’s Cube competitions in the last eight years and has two national appearances and two state titles.

Sheronika “Roni” Simeon sings “Back To Black” by Amy Winehouse, throwing down a bouquet of roses and also her coat during the performance. Simeon took second place at the Rising Stars competition.

Jack Benedict, representing Kappa Sigma, was the final act of the night. His performance of his original song, “Roses and Honey”, helped him win third place at Rising Stars.

Lesley Ayala, representing Sigma Lambda Gamma, sings “¡Corre!” by Jesse & Joy, getting the whole crowd clapping during her act in Rising Stars, previously called Open Mic Night. Ayala later sang “Que Sepan Todos” by Vicente Fernández in a duet with Analisa Chavez-Muñoz.

Azarion “Zay” Perkins sings “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” by Boyz II Men during Rising Stars. The crowd joined Perkin’s song with their phones until the song ended.

Top Bod nominees, along with the rest of the audience, join Zay Perkin’s song by swaying their phone lights back and forth. This authentic reaction from the crowd remained until the end of the act.

Analisa Chavez-Muñoz, representing Sigma Lambda Gamma, sings “Tú me Acostumbraste” by Natalia Lafourcade during Rising Stars. Chavez-Muñoz later sang “Que Sepan Todos” by Vicente Fernández in a duet with Lesley Ayala and was named into the Top 10 Top Bod Nominations at the end of the night.

Carolyn Jones, assistant director of Student Life & Community Engagement, shuffles a Rubik’s Cube to promote transparency for one of the acts of Rising Stars. Jones was one of three judges during the event, accompanied by Teresa Clouch, associate vice president for Student Life, and Joseph Tinsley, director of Admissions.

Marin Schwarz (left) and Haley Carlin (right) sing “Don’t Wanna Be Without Ya” by Penny and Sparrow. They were the final duet of the night for Rising Stars.
