Bod Brief: Men’s tennis sweeps Augustana to begin conference play

After dropping just its second match of the season, Washburn men’s tennis returned home for a conference matchup against Augustana University.

The IchabodsThey rebounded well with a 4-0 sweep of the Vikings to begin MIAA play 1-0 and move to 11-2 overall on the season.

In doubles play, the freshman duo of Tim Hammes and Noah Neideck had no trouble from the third position, winning 6-0. Next it was sophomores Daniel Bird and Miquel Perez claiming a 6-1 victory from the second spot.

Those wins gave the Ichabods the doubles point, although freshman Matthew Earle and sophomore Sebastian Pjontek played out their match, winning 6-3.

Singles play wrapped up just as quickly, first with Hammes, ranked No. 30 overall, winning in two sets from the second position. Next was Pjontek, ranked 67, who also closed out his opponent in two sets from the third spot.

Perez gave Washburn a 4-0 win with a two-set victory of his own playing on the first court. Earle, Bird and Neideck were each ahead in their singles matches, which were left unfinished.

The Ichabods will be at home for the next three matches, all at the Washburn Tennis Complex. The first comes Tuesday, Mar. 22 against McPherson College.
