Washburn track and field hosted the Washburn All-Kansas Kansas Invite Jan. 22, 2022. Division 2 schools and community colleges from across the state gathered to compete with an abundance of athletes.

The day started strong in the field events with freshman Paola Castaldi finishing second in the women’s weight throw with a throw of 14.42 meters. The men finished the weight throw with 6 athletes in the top 10; junior Braden Rose, who finished third with a throw of 17.51 meters, followed by junior Mitch Miller coming in fifth, senior Sam Stranathan coming in sixth, sophomore Justice Akinmoladun finishing in eighth place, sophomore Patrick Altenor coming in ninth place, and freshman Jaden Magana finishing tenth place respectively.

On the men’s side of long jump, sophomore Josh Hopkins finished in second place with a jump of 7.00 meters respectively.

In the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries sophomores Romain Henry and Pau Borillo-Febrer qualified for the finals finishing first and third respectively. Henry and Borillo-Febrer came back and snatched the first and second place slots respectively in the 60-meter hurdle finals with times of 8.15 seconds and 8.45 seconds.

“For me, it wasn’t good. I won, but it’s still not the time I want to do,” Henry said.

Henry is striving to get his time down to 7.90 seconds, which he believes is manageable.

“You just have to be patient,” Henry said. “I’m really not a patient guy. I don’t want to wait three weeks, but I guess I have to.”

Senior Lyndsay Stinson was able to finish the 600 meter run in second place with a time of 1:30.58 with freshman Katelyn Jones finishing fifth with a time of 1:31.18 respectively.

Freshman Lily Johnson was ready to compete in her first meet of the season and finished with two top-two positions by taking second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:20.60 followed by second in the mile with a time of 5:09.14.

“This was my Rust Buster,” Johnson said. “I was happy I got to practice being tough and just seeing where I could start the season so I was pretty happy with it.”

“I’m not super big into leading races,” Johnson said. “I like finishing hard, that’s much more my style, but I was really proud of myself for going out taking the lead. I tried something new and wasn’t content with running with everybody else.”

On the men’s side of the 800- meter run, sophomore Collen McLain took fourth with a 1:56.65 which is also a PR time in this event.

“All around I thought we did pretty good. I think it’s looking good going into the next few weeks where we get to some bigger meets and some pretty stiff competition next week, so I think we’re in a good spot,” said head coach Cameron Babb.

The 400- meter dash was a successful event all around. Senior Chia Okoro finished third with a time of 57.73, sophomore Isabella Hohl finished sixth with a time of 58.37, and senior Nikki Kraaijeveld finished ninth with a time of 1:00.38.

For the men in the 400- meter dash, freshmen Jacob Herr finished third with a time of 50.45 and Hunter Hess finished seventh with a 51.41.

“It’s kind of time to start toning it down and getting the kids feeling better and better,” said Babb. “And that’s really the main focus is just to get the kids fresh, get them healthy, get their legs back under them. Once that happens, you tend to start to see those marks and PRs and big things start to happen.”

The Iichabods will stay home this weekend to host the Washburn Open Friday, Jan. 28, and Saturday, Jan. 29.
