On Saturday, Sep. 18, 2021, Washburn volleyball defeated the University of Nebraska at Kearney 3-1. The win moved the Ichabods to the number one spot for the first time in program history.

Out of more than 300 D2 volleyball programs, Washburn University ranks number one in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll for the first time in program history.

The milestone comes on the back of defeating the University of Nebraska at Kearney, last week’s number one team, on the road in just four sets on Sept. 18. The performance swayed the committee to move Washburn to the top spot, jumping over the Lopers and Angelo State University who was ranked number two.

The win, along with another over Fort Hays State University the day before, gave the Ichabods a dominant 10-1 record on the year that includes three wins over ranked opponents.

This week Washburn will look to defend its top spot as Emporia State University visits on Sept. 21, and the team will travel to face number seven ranked University of Central Missouri on Saturday, Sept. 25.
