Washburn University baseball played on March 11, 2025, at 3 p.m. against Augustana University. The Ichabod baseball team was able to keep Augustana from scoring a run and etched out a victory 10-0.
Washburn scored one run in the 2nd inning, three in the 4th, two in the 5th, and four in the 7th ending the game via mercy rule after seven innings, 10-0 taking a lead in the series.
Harley Douglas, head baseball coach, emphasized the importance of strong pitching, noting that the team’s performance on the mound was a key factor in getting back on track.
“We didn’t play very well over the weekend and didn’t pitch it well, so to see Griff and Bresler come out and put up zeros against a really good hitting team was nice,” Douglas said. “Our hitters have been keeping us in games, but it was fun to watch our pitching staff respond to the challenge today.”
Douglas also emphasized the importance of maintaining high energy and taking control of the game’s tempo rather than reacting to the opponent’s momentum
“I think we’ll bring the same energy, for sure,” Douglas said. “They’re a really good team, and we know they’ll answer back tomorrow. But we talked about matching their intensity, and one of our guys said it’s up to them to match ours. I thought that was well said. We want to set the tone and make somebody play up to our level.”
Griffin Huiatt, junior pitcher, downplays personal pride, attributing success to the team’s overall performance, including the strong defense that alleviated the pressure.
“I’m as proud of my performance as I am as a team performance. I think, obviously, we had a rough weekend last weekend. They’re a nationally ranked team, and I think it was big for them. It was big as a whole, with good defense, we hit the ball well, so it took a lot of pressure off me,” Huiatt said.
Washburn will play the second game of the series on March 12 at 2 p.m. and aims to take the two-game series win.
