The Ichabod baseball team won its first game against Missouri Southern State University Feb. 28. This victory caused the Ichabods to hand Missouri Southern its first conference loss of the year.
“Our first weekend down in Arkansas, we showed what we could do in our first game [against a good team] and scored I think 17 or 19 runs,” said Jett Buck, senior utility player.
Stepping to bat with one base loaded, Jackson Mervosh, junior infielder, hit a home run to bring Payton McHarg, senior outfielder, home for a 7-3 lead on the third home run of the third inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Cash Jay, senior infielder, homered to left field. Not long after, Buck stepped up next and ripped it for another home run.
“I was not really sure what was going to come but then right out of the hand, I realized it was identical to the last [pitch], so I took a hack at it,” Buck said.
Harley Douglas, head baseball coach, spoke on the team’s success in the 7 homerun game.
“I would take 10 [home runs] if they hit them, you know, that would be great,” Douglas said.
Griffin Huiatt, junior pitcher, struck out Missouri Southern’s first batter. The Ichabods allowed one run but quickly recovered with a three-out, no-run inning the next time out on the field.
Although bases were loaded, Washburn ended the fifth inning with only two additional runs.
Starting the sixth inning, the Ichabods gave Huiatt a break, bringing in Fidel Hatch, junior pitcher.
Missouri Southern tried to make a comeback but with Hayden Priest, senior catcher, on base, Buck hit his second home run of the night scoring two more runs.
Later in the game, after a hit to right-center field and a stolen second base by Easton Bruce, senior outfielder, McHarg was walked and then both stole the next base on a wild pitch before Blake Scott, senior catcher, brought everyone home for an Ichabod victory of 14-6.
With this only being the first game of a three-game series, the Ichabods understood that it would take all weekend to get the best of Missouri Southern.
“We just need to really stick to our game plan, with what we have to do on the hitting side. I like [with] our matchups, hopefully, we can go out and get one tomorrow and then go for that sweep on Sunday,” Douglas said.
The Ichabods also own the second game of the series Saturday with a score of 11-8 and look to continue their progress this season.
