Washburn Football bounced back from a loss to dismantle the Bronchos of the University of Central Oklahoma on Homecoming weekend, 37-9. The Ichabod’s move to 5-3 on the season.

The Ichabods capped off the first half of action with a rushing touchdown from sophomore quarterback Kellen Simoncic to lead 9-0. The Washburn defense shut out the Bronchos’ offense in the first half and compiled three total takeaways on the day.

Senior receiver James Letcher, Jr. found his way into the end zone three times, proving his versatility as he scored on the ground, through the air and with a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown.

“Great, great bounce back … He [Letcher, Jr.] just has that ability to make guys miss,” Washburn coach Craig Schurig said. “It’s hard to corral him so the more times he can get touches, the better.”

The Ichabod’s defense paved the way for the offensive explosions. The Ichabod defense racked up 4 sacks, 3 interceptions, 11 tackles for loss and 3 quarterback pressures.

“Everybody’s looking at us thinking they can throw the ball; we gotta make them pay for it … I think we responded really well” Washburn defensive back Channon Ross said. “The defense felt like it was on us last week … today we did what we had to do.” Ross finished the day with an interception, 3 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Washburn will head south to Tahlequah, Oklahoma for their next game against the RiverHawks of Northeastern State at 2 p.m., Oct. 29, at Doc Wadley Stadium.
