The Washburn Ichabods’ Senior Day ended in disappointment as Emporia State pulled away for a 45–17 victory at Yager Stadium on Nov. 7.
Emporia State jumped to a 14–0 lead early, scoring on a blocked punt return and a long touchdown pass. Washburn fought back with a 36-yard field goal from junior placekicker Aidan Battle. Junior running back Lucas Oitker and sophomore running back Cam Robinson both rushed touchdowns, tying the game 17–17 at halftime.
The turning point came in the third quarter when a potential go-ahead touchdown was wiped out by a penalty, a sequence that could have put Washburn up 24–17. From there, Emporia State dominated the second half, scoring 28 unanswered points including two interception returns for touchdowns.
“I mean, having the ball first to go with the two, you’ve got to punch it in. Whether it’s penalties or execution, you’ve gotta be able to punch it in,” said Head Coach Zach Watkins.
Freshman quarterback Logan Madden threw for 156 yards, while Oitker and Robinson combined for 157 total yards and two scores. Sophomore linebacker J.C. Heim led the defense with 13 tackles, and Robinson added 101 all-purpose yards. Other players also had bright moments, with Battle’s field goal and senior punter Jake Zeller averaging 51.2 yards on five punts.
Washburn, now 2–8 overall and 1–7 in the MIAA, will close the season next week on the road against Missouri Southern, aiming to finish strong for the seniors.
