The Black Student Union gathered this week at Washburn University at Union underground, in an atmosphere filled with openness and pride. The Black Student Union meeting became more than just a discussion, it was a moment of connection, empowerment and shared vision for a more inclusive campus.
Cinai Anderson, president of BSU, started the meeting with updates about BSU upcoming events and plans.
“My vision as the president for the BSU is to build strong leaders that are socially aware, politically aware and also, when they leave Washburn, they can go out and help the community and just be a great, well-rounded leader,” Anderson said.
BSU is going to have its biggest conference, the Big XII, from Feb.28 to March 2. Anderson added that their biggest project will be preparing for Black History Month.
“I love attending BSU meetings. I come here every week and I like the environment and the people I get to meet here,” said Samari Berry, senior integrated studies said. “Something I would love to add to the meeting is a greater number of students. I hate how many students tend to drop throughout the semester.”
“I really just want to advocate and tell them about BSU at any point, at any chance that I get,” Berry said.
It’s a kind of community of people who have your back whenever you need help. BSU also holds study nights every Tuesday and Thursday.
“The weekly meetings are aimed at creating a community and a safe space for people to relax and de-stress from the semester,” said Ka’hari McFan, sophomore criminal justice and sociology major.
The Black Student Union meets every Monday from 7-9 p.m. in the Union Underground. Next week’s meeting will focus on upcoming events and new initiatives for the month ahead.
