Students gathered for free pizza and professional advice during the Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) meeting on Oct. 28, where two representatives from SSC CPAs + Advisors shared their experiences in public accounting.
Dylan Jensen, CPA and senior tax associate, and Joshua Staats, tax associate and Washburn graduate, visited Washburn University to discuss accounting careers, internships and the advantages of working at a smaller firm.
SSC CPAs + Advisors has offices in Topeka, Lawrence, Meriden, Salina and Kansas City. The firm offers audit, tax and client accounting, along with wealth management services. Jensen and Staats said smaller firms provide more hands-on experience and stronger client relationships.
“I didn’t think I’d enjoy directly communicating with clients at first, but I’ve actually really enjoyed it,” Staats said. “I’m a big people person and that’s been reinforced by working at a smaller firm like SSC.”
Jensen discussed the firm’s employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) which allows employees to become partial owners after several years. He said the structure gives staff a stronger sense of investment in their work and is uncommon among accounting firms in Kansas.
Both speakers also mentioned how technology, including new AI tools, is improving tax research and efficiency. They encouraged students to explore internships and consider smaller firms for broader experience.
After the presentation, Danny Funk, director of graduate programs in Washburn’s School of Business, talked about the Master of Accountancy (MAcc) and MBA programs.
“An educated workforce is more important than ever. Getting that next level of education, whether it’s an MBA or a MAcc, can set students up for long-term success,” Funk said.
The meeting gave students professional connections, career guidance and pizza, making it an informative and enjoyable day.
