On Sept. 23, Beta Alpha Psi hosted two talks given by Topeka businesses. Amy Klotz, CFO of Advisors Excel, and Brian J. Florea, tax accountant of Wendling Noe Nelson & Johnson, spoke about their firms and how internship opportunities fit in the lives of business students.
Klotz spoke about the nature of her job as an executive officer.
“I do have a very demanding job,” Klotz said. “I think people are like, ‘oh, that’s a cool job,’ but it comes with a lot of responsibility. It comes with a to-do list that never ends ever. But I like it because I get to touch a lot of stuff. I have over 30 companies. I’m responsible for multiple industries.”
Klotz also spoke on her origins as an accounting student at Washburn and what drew her to the profession before becoming a CFO.
“I love numbers. I love puzzle pieces. I love how they all fit together,” Klotz said.
David Sollars, dean of the Brenneman School of Business, announced that Klotz would be added as an Alumni Fellow this year. Klotz will be honored at a luncheon in mid November.
Florea presented how his firm made use of data analytics.
“…when we get intern candidates and full-time students, they come and they talk to us about data analytics,” Florea said. “They talk about how they’re proficient in Excel and things like that. So, we wanted to share some things […] that we are doing.”
Florea showed BAP members how the firm uses data from clients to fill out tax returns efficiently and effectively.
Beta Alpha Psi’s next meeting will be held on Oct. 6 at 12 p.m. at the Memorial Union.
