Washburn University baseball beat Augustana University with an 8-6 win March 12.
The game started slow, but gradually the Ichabods scored four runs against Augustana.
“I thought they did a good job of staying through and driving base hits and not trying to rip balls in the gap,” said Harley Douglas, head coach.
Hayden Priest, senior catcher, added that the team was struggling to bat, but eventually found its groove.
“We all just kind of took a couple of innings, and then once we got in the groove and kind of figured out how we need to hit the pitcher, then I think it was a good tone-setter,” Priest said.
However, Augustana wasn’t done fighting. In the fourth inning, Augustana answered the Ichabods’ four runs with two of their own.
After multiple pitching changes, Washburn was able to hold Augustana to three more runs after the Icabods were able to score three themselves in the bottom of the eighth giving them the win 8-6 and a series win over Augustana.
Douglas noted the impressive effort from his team against a tough and talented Augustana team.
“Well, I think it’s big. It shows what our guys have and the makeup of what these guys have. We have got to show that we can play with teams like [Augustana],” Douglas said.
