On Friday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 5., members of the Players Student Theatre Organization held a costume closet clean out. The objective was to clean the theater and support student travel to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Players Student Theatre Organization.
The costume closet clean out event happened for the first time after years at Washburn University. This event involved donating items that had been removed from the theater such as costumes, furniture, books and more.
Beetle Hatch, sophomore archeology major, Ruby Johnson, sophomore music major, and Lauren Province, junior theater major, stood in front of Garvey Hall to collect donations.
Julie Noonan, Players Student Theater advisor and director of theater, said that the items that were at the costume closet clean out were all items that were used for shows and some were used just one time for a specific show, so they were in good condition.
“[It was] stuff that was down in the costume area that wasn’t new, wasn’t going to be used in probably the next three, four years, sometimes it’s sizes, and sometimes it’s just not an item that we expect to use in the next few shows. So there was not a lot of items really, just some that have been sitting there and didn’t use,” Noonan said.
Noonan also said the department can’t sell anything and everything is for donation to the student players.
“If there’s extra stuff that can be donated, the department cannot sell anything. So we donate it, technically, to players and say, ‘Here you do what you need to do with this,” Noonan said.
The costume closet clean out is not an annual event, but the department may have another event in the coming years.
