Topeka Pride and Office of Student Involvement and Development host drag shows from diverse backgrounds to celebrate LGBTQIA+ culture and educate the public about drag. The event was organized in the Memorial Union April 26.

Topeka Pride is the largest annual LGBTQIA+ pride celebration in Topeka, Kansas, which shows not only the Pride of Topeka but the pride across the country. Claire St. Claire, one of the drag queens, surprised audiences with different dancing skills and tricks, such as cartwheels and back handsprings.

Kansas Pride is a federally recognized non-profit that provides support, love, education and fun. The event was the celebration of GAYpril with a cast of local drag performers.

The drag show this year was performed by Kansas Campbell (host), Jeni Tonic, Novacayne Demornay, Lil Miss KansA$$ and Claire St. Claire. Lil Miss KansA$$ started to drag for over a year last February.

Elena Simmons, junior political science major, and Storm Henry, senior anthropology major, joined the show together to enjoy its atmosphere. Simmons shared that the show brings enjoyment and stress relief as well as entertainment, and she hopes to see it again next year.

It’s Washburn’s fifth annual drag performance since 2019. Feni Tonic had several performances with different dress-ups during the drag show this year.

Participants tipped for one-by-one performances with cash. During the show, the audience could also donate to Topeka Pride by Venmo or Cash App as an optional tip.

Campbell plays both the emcee and the dancing performers during the show. As Campbell took off her pancho, a new dance style took place in front of the audience.

During the show, there are several mini-games, such as the lucky number pick or the opportunity to volunteer with the performers. According to Lil Miss Kansa$$, the drag performer felt that drag shows give them freedom and proved that drag is fun and is not a scary thing for the community.
