The WSGA plays a role in representing and promoting the best care of Washburn students by contributing to the connection between the student body and the university administration. The Spring Fling celebrates the introduction ofGeorge Burdick, junior philosophy and political science major, as the president of WSGA and Bella Wood, junior integrated studies major, as the vice president. Wood was also the organizer of the Washburn Leadership Institute orientation for the 14th annual Leadership Challenge Event this year.

According to Burdick (right), Bella (left) is remarkably dependable, and they’re great at working together. Wood and Burdick planned to empower students to build the campus into a place where everyone can feel comfortable being themselves and be challenged in healthy ways.

Mason Meyer, a freshman finance major, also a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, joined the event to congratulate his friend Burdick, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, who became the new president. Burdick’s favorite part about the WSGA is the connections it has across campus with all the major players in the student body, whether that be with the Leadership Institute, Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity, or other organizations.

There is food that serves audiences during the event. Wood shared that every student in Washburn is a member of the WSGA, which means the WSGA cares about students, even if they are not official representatives like senators.

According to Burdick, the WSGA campaign team was a massive help throughout the several intense weeks of campaigning. Burdick shares that they are working as a team and crafting a budget that will ensure they can finish the goals they have set out to accomplish.

Students at Washburn University pay a student activity fee each semester, which helps to support several funding initiatives and events that are open to all students. All students, including those enrolled in law school, accessed plenty of events, activities, and services hosted by the WSGA.

Burdick has served in the WSGA for three years since his freshman year. He was a member of the WSGA in his freshman year as a senator, sophomore year being the speaker of the senate and junior year serving as the budget director.

Burdick and Wood are looking forward to the goal they campaigned for in Washburn: regenerating campus vibrancy. Their end goal was to have a multi-part educational series to get students connected, the resources and the education they need to create clubs, host events and make the campus more involved.

Wood is a big help in the process of Burdick being the president. Burdick shared that he and Wood helped to keep each other accountable and supported each other throughout other opportunities.
