The Washburn Community Garden has its first planting day of the spring season March 2,. The community was founded in 2009 by dedicated LinC Bonner Scholars with the vision of showing collaboration, sustainability and community engagement at Washburn University.

The organizing team meets Wednesday, February 28, in the Bods Feeding Bods Lounge within Kuehne Hall before the planting day to decide what to plant. The team emailed a volunteer list when items were ready to harvest.

The project requires volunteers who are willing to weed, water, and take care of the garden. Washburn Community Garden was involved in sponsoring Washburn Transformational experience and Independent Research projects.

Nehemiah Cervantes, sophomore biology major, joins the community garden activities as a student volunteer to clear grass. The Washburn Community Garden participants welcomed seasoned gardeners or just getting started without any gathering skills.

Emily DeShazer (middle), web specialist, is also the co-coordinator of the Washburn Community Garden. DeShazer shared that the items planted in the garden are going to the Bods Feeding Bods to serve the Washburn community freely.

The planting area is in between the Living Learning Center and West Hall. The activities were organized to build the connection so that students, faculty and the community could come together to cultivate fresh items.

Tomatoes and peppers will be in the garden at the beginning of May. Volunteers cleared out the grass to help the vegetables grow and not compete for nutrients.
