Biology club elects new officers

The biology club met Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023 in Stoffer to elect new officers.

Desi Thimesch, senior biology major, former president and current co-secretary, opened the meeting with a weekly presentation. This week’s presentation was about one of her biggest fears, orcas.

After the presentation club officer elections took place. . In which the members nominated each other and proceeded to hold speeches before proceeding to the vote. After each position was decided, the members clapped and the newly elected officers gave a brief word of thanks.

The new officers are as follows:
– Carolyn Wilson, president
– August Wilson, vice-president
– Desi Thimesch, co-secretary
– Avery Weishaar, co-secretary
– Chris Preister, treasurer
– Mary Tyler, historian/social media
– Erica Guldner, historian/social media
– Mack Geil, event planner
– Abby Fette, event planner
– Sam Kim, collaboration coordinator
– Eileen Smith, sustainability coordinator

Even with these new officers in place, the club happily welcomes new members. Any and all majors are welcome, including people who don’t even attend Washburn, and with its own mascot, weekly presentations, and a close-knit community, the biology club is open to all.

Carolyn Wilson, senior forensic biology major, and newly elected president even gave a few words on why anyone should join the biology club.

“People should join biology club because we do a lot of fun activities. It’s for anyone who’s interested in learning about biology. We’ll have guest speakers, students will share presentations: silly ones, fun ones, and some of their current work. Biology club is also a good opportunity to get more general resources, like CV [curriculum vitae] night, and that’s good for anyone who needs a CV for any job, not just biology,” Wilson said.

The club also has more upcoming events such as the Native Plant and Pollinator Garden, every Saturday in September from 8am to 12pm on the south side of Stoffer, and Women in Science Day, October 16.

Next week’s meeting will be in Stoffer 311 instead of Stoffer 007 due to testing.
