In continuation of this year’s WUmester theme of health and healing, students, faculty and staff congregated at the lower level of the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility for a session of workouts. The event which was mainly attended by faculty and staff and took place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Kristen Harrel, a senior in data analytics major, was the instructor at the event. He took participants through slow moves and stretches which quickly progressed into more difficult routines that left participants warmed up, panting and sweaty.
There were constant breaks for participants to catch their breaths and refuel on water and energy drinks. Harrel shared how important group exercises are.

“Group exercises provide incredible social wellness benefits as well as physical wellness for students, faculty and staff. Stress is through the roof for students and faculty as midterms get closer. Exercise is one way to alleviate that,” Harrel said.

The importance of the health and healing community workout for students, faculty and staff cannot be over-emphasized. Heidi Staerkel, associate director of international programs, attended and felt the event was important to be at for your mental, emotional and physical health.

“It is really important for overall health, not just physical health, but also emotional and mental wellbeing. Because for me, during the day, things get busy and you just need a break from it sometimes. And it is just good for your body and mind,” Staerkel said. “I have seen my physical health improve during the time I have been a part of this. It is important to get out and move and you will always feel better afterward.”

While the presence of faculty and staff was noticeable at the event, the same was not the case for students. Harrel stressed on improved outreach and encouragement to improve student participation.

“I think word of mouth is really important to reach out to students,” Harrel said. “I think when you are exercising, finding a friend to go with you, if you are anxious about the first class that you go to, partnering up is a great way to get motivated.”

As events related to the WUmester theme for the year continue, it is hoped that students, not just faculty and staff, would seize the opportunity to improve their physical and mental well-being.

“I would say there are a lot of options in any group exercise that can fit all abilities and I would encourage everyone to seek something that they are interested in, including kickboxing and other classes,” Harrel said.

The event ended at 12:15 p.m. with all participants feeling refreshed and better from the group exercise. The next event will be announced in due time.
