Throw what you know: Members of Zeta Tau Alpha throw up their crown hand sign at the pink out tailgate Oct. 16, 2021. Students filled their calendars with philanthropy week events.

Zeta Tau Alpha, one of Washburn’s sororities, participated in philanthropy week from Monday, Oct. 18, to Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021. During philanthropy week, Zeta hosted a series of events in support of their philanthropy, Breast Cancer Education and Awareness.

Zeta Tau Alpha partners with Bright Pink, American Cancer Society and the National Football League. In doing so, Zeta dedicates time to raise money, awareness and serve those who are affected by breast cancer.

“As an organization we are all about empowering women and giving back. 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. We want to help as many people as we can with the money that we raise, as well as bring awareness and education about this disease that impacts so many women all over the world,” said Rachel Janzen, president of Zeta Tau Alpha.

During philanthropy week Zeta hosted a variety of events. On Monday, Oct. 18, Zeta hosted “Think Pink Pink Pancakes” where people were served little breakfast platters. On Tuesday, Oct. 19, Zeta hosted a social media bingo, which took place on their different social media platforms. On Wednesday, Oct. 20, Zeta hosted “Big Man on Campus” in which only males competed in a competition in a variety of categories. On Thursday, Oct. 21, Zeta had a percentage night at Panda Express. Lastly, on Saturday, Oct. 23, Zeta volunteered at “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk”.

“I personally love when we do events involving food. Food always brings in a variety of people who come to hang out and support a great cause,” Janzen said.

All of the money that Zeta raises goes directly to the ZTA Foundation in support of Zeta’s three national partnerships, which all happen to promote breast cancer education and awareness.
Zeta does most of its promoting through its social media accounts. Zeta can be found on Instagram under the username @ztalphamu. In addition to social media, Zeta does promotions around campus through posters and sidewalk chalk.
