Ichabods compete in first track meet of the year

Leave it all on the track: In the 60-meter dash, Mandana Vouillemin in lane five finished 1st with a time of 7.92. Isabella Hohl in lane four came in 3rd with a time of 8.01.

The Indoor Athletic Facility will see its second indoor track meet this Saturday, Jan. 29. Teams will come to campus for the Washburn All-Kansas Invite, which will begin at 11 a.m.

Though the facility remains closed to spectators, fans can find up-to-date results at wusports.com on the home meet information page. Fans should select the live results option.

The men’s and women’s teams had their first meet of the season Saturday, Jan. 16, which allowed athletes who haven’t competed in more than a year or longer to put down their first marks of the season.

Head coach Cameron Babb said he thought the meet went very well after coming back from such a long break.

“It was probably our best opening meet in January,” said Babb.

The Ichabods had a combined 29 top-five finishes, including three individual top finishes; Tom Haug, Mandana Vouillemin and Skyler Saunders.

Babb said that it was promising to see how well the athletes competed in their first meet.
“We had a lot of kids open up the meet either beating or tying their personal best, which we don’t ever expect at the first meet,” said Babb.

Haug, a junior from Manhattan, Kansas, got first in the men’s high jump with a height of 2.04 meters (6-feet-8-inches), which qualifies him provisionally for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The automatic qualifying mark in the men’s high jump is 2.16 or 7-feet-1-inch. Haug said that his goals for the day was to just go out and have fun in the new facility.

Vouillemin, a freshman from Nice, France, placed first in the 60-meter run with a time of 7.92 seconds.

Other athletes who made their mark were sprinter Romain Henry and pole vaulter Virgi Scardanzan.

Henry, a freshman from Aix en Provence, France, won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.13 seconds.

“It’s been like four years since I’ve ran that fast, so I was really happy,” said Henry just after the race.

Not only did his time provisionally qualify him for nationals, but he also broke a Washburn school record in the process, which previously stood at 8.29 seconds. The automatic qualifying mark for the 60-meter hurdles is 7.90 seconds.

Henry also anchored the 4×4 and had a split of 48:35:00. Babb said that he is impressed with the versatility that Henry has after being able to go from sprinting hurdles to running a 400.

“That wasn’t a surprise,” said Babb. “I knew he was a talented kid; we just had never seen him do it before.”

Scardanzan, a junior from Preganziol, Italy, placed second in pole vault with a height of 3.96 meters (12-feet-11-inches) and also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. The automatic qualifying mark for the women’s pole vault is 4.06 meters, which is about 13-feet-3-inches.

“We have a whole season ahead and great things are coming,” said Scardanzan.

Babb said that practice this week was focused on recovery after the intensity of a meet.

“We adjusted practice and focused more on keeping the days short and crisp,” he said.
