Students and faculty work hard all year so having family weekend allows them to share their experiences and show their hard work to those they care about.
There were activities in Washburn A/B for the whole family starting at 10a.m. Sept. 23.
Families had the opportunity to get henna tattoos, character drawings, sign painting and take pictures at the photo booth. There was also a free raffle give away, free popcorn and a DJ playing live music.
Twelve different organizations started to tailgate.
The last activity for Family Day was the football game at 1 p.m. versus the University of Central Missouri.
Some people came with their friends and their significant others.
Christina McClaws, freshman forensic investigation major, invited her family to come to Family Day. Jonna McClaws, her mother, enjoyed seeing how her daughter was adjusting to college and having the chance to experience a day on campus.
“I like being able to come and see how the kids are behaving and enjoying the college experience. I also like seeing how well adjusted they are and what they might need,” Jonna McClaws said.
Rosalyn Wilkinison, freshman family and human services major, invited her family and a friend. Wilkinison’s and her younger brother, Wayne, don’t get to see each other that often. Wayne was excited to spend time with her and that he was able to get free candy.
Family weekend is also for the staff to be able to show their family what they do during the day.They spend much of their time on campus just like the students and enjoy showing their accomplishments off as well.
Richard Chavez, facilities manager for the Memorial Union, building team. He invited his family and got to see his granddaughter.
“Spending time with little ones and we like hearing the music,” Chavez said.
Heather Pfannenstiel is a lecturer in the biology department. She invited her husband and daughters.
“I like getting to show my kids where I work. They don’t get to come to work with me very often. So this is a chance for them to kind of see what my day looks like while they’re at school and daycare”, Pfannensteil said. “Plus the girls really like the cheerleaders and band so they are looking forward to that,” Pfannensteil.
Overall Family Day was a good way for the students and faculties to interact with their families, and show what they have accomplished on campus so far.
