Students battle each other in a ‘Mario Kart’ gaming tournament

  • Ben Bickerstaff, sophomore in history education, and Jesse Mort, junior in actuarial science, pretend to face off in preparation for the tournament. They came together to play “Mario Kart 8” in the Esports lounge.

  • Mort concentrates during the practice runs before the tournament. He placed in the top five just in practice.

  • Kenneth Nowatzke, sophomore in forensic investigation, stands and watches the others as they play a practice round of “Mario Kart.” He was with a team called “The good, The bad, and the Blueshell” and he was dressed for the part.

  • Colton Cattoor, freshman in biology, practices for the Esports team for “Overwatch.” He played with two other members in practice.

  • Tyler Haywood, freshman in forensic chemistry, and Nowatzke smile and banter while starting the first round of their tournament group. Haywood ended up in the championship game.

  • Tavo Cavin, sophomore in sports management, and Keaton Remp, sophomore in psychology, sit and wait for the next part of the first round. They waited in between rounds and bantered with other players.

  • A group of students play the first round on the second television. There ended up only being two from this group that went to the championship game.

  • Mort, Haywood, Cj Thurlow, freshman in international business and marketing, and Cavin sit together and focus on the next round of the tournament. They looked concentrated to keep Mort out of the top spots.

  • Darby Johnson, junior in graphic design, and Cantoor practice “Overwatch” for the club. They worked together to get wins to get better with the game.
