Five shows to binge during your brief Thanksgiving Break

Andrew Shermoen

With Thanksgiving break around the corner, I ask you this: be thankful for the internet and modern streaming services. Here are some picks for five original programs worth binging over break.

1. “The Crown” (Netflix)

Netflix’s newest bio series focuses on the well-known and beloved, Queen Elizabeth II. Claire Foy plays the heir to the throne in her younger years after her wedding. Matt Smith plays Elizabeth’s husband Prince Philip. The first season has ten, one-hour episodes for you to devour. I’m sure you won’t be able to stop watching. Did I mention the whole thing is being penned by the man behind “The Queen” and “Frost/Nixon?”

2. “Goliath” (Amazon)

From David E. Kelly, the man behind “L.A. Law,” “The Practice” and “Boston Legal,” comes the law show that Kelly has always wanted to tell. Billy Bob Thornton plays a struggling lawyer who takes on a new case that finds him head to head with the former law firm he established. Seeing David Kelly return to his the genre wheelhouse he created should be enough to draw fans of the genre in, not to mention it stars Billy Bob Thornton.

3. “Good Girls Revolt” (Amazon)

While this shows crew isn’t much to pay attention to, it definitely has a cast and setting that will keep you watching. Depicting the difficulty of being a female reporter in 1960s, “Good Girls Revolt” has an amazing cast of young actresses. Genevieve Angelson, Anna Camp and Erin Darke take on the main three characters that are the focus of the show. Fans curious about early feminist movements in the work force should love the show.

4. “Black Mirror” (Netflix)

Charlie Brooker’s techno-horror anthology series is permanently on Netflix. After much deliberation, Netflix has nabbed the show and it now functions as its main producer and distributor. The great thing about “Black Mirror” is that every episode is disconnected from the other, so new fans can jump in to the show’s third season, but it would be foolish to skip the show’s first two. It only has 11 episodes amongst all three of its fantastic and frightening seasons.

5. “The Man in the High Castle” (Amazon)

Amazon’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s alt-history novel about the Axis powers winning WWII has been out for quite some time now. It was hailed as one of 2015’s best new television series and it’s easy to see why. It’s thrilling and edge-of-your-seat mystery had audiences enthralled and constantly clicking the next episode button. Its second season airs on Amazon on Dec. 12, so it’s the perfect time for you to catch up.
