The music bingo event was organized by the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation on March 23 at 7 p.m. in Washburn A/B.
Washburn Alumni Association and Foundation members, students and fraternity and sorority participated in the event. The event began with handing out bingo cards, followed by an explanation of how the game would be played.
“We wanted to have events that were fun so people could network while they’re having fun,” said Amanda Hughes, director of membership and outreach. “We really try to bring fellow Ichabods together in a fun atmosphere to network and get to know each other and have that real feel of community.”
Hughes added the goal was to create events where people could network while enjoying themselves because sharing both old and new music helps people connect more easily.
“We host a lot of different events, not only in Topeka, not only on campus, but we go all over the United States, where we have large concentrations of alumni and take our show on the road,” said Susie Hoffmann, senior alumni association director. “ Several people came up tonight to say that this event is way more fun when the students are here […]. We probably need to rethink and invite students to come to the one in the fall, because everybody says it’s way more fun when the students are here. Our alumni really enjoy being around the students.”
Hoffmann mentioned that she selected a wide variety of songs including popular crowd favorites from different genres and decades, to appeal to attendees of all ages ranging from younger students to older participants.
“At this event, I think it’s just a lot of fun. I’m glad that she’s [Susie and her team] actually bringing in students because they get to participate,” said Jeanne Vawter, alumni. “Susie has done a wonderful job of getting more and more alumni involved in this association. I was a Zeta Tau Alpha in the sorority and I can always remember homecoming.”
Vawter also shared that when she first started attending alumni events she was surprised by how many friendships WU alumni had formed.
The music bingo event brought together Washburn students, alumni and members of fraternities and sororities. Attendees participated in the game while enjoying a variety of songs from different genres and decades, with different foods and drinks. The event provided opportunities for networking and interaction with both students and alumni taking part in the activities.
