The Pilates with Gammas event was held on Feb. 20 at a private area of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center from 5-7 p.m.
The event was hosted by Sigma Lambda Gammas National Sorority, beginning with a light warm up and stretching session before moving into pilates. It was available to all Washburn students.
“It was for our recruitment week. All the events were different and some of them were crafty but a lot of the gammas are athletic or goal oriented people like myself and JD,” said Tyler Naquin, vice president of recruitment. “It’d be really fun to do a recruitment event where girls had an opportunity to do less something that maybe is less artsy and more like workout available, something that allows somebody to use a different skill, rather than just crafts.”
Naquin said recruitment helps women connect with members, ask questions and experience Greek life, even if they don’t end up joining. She added that their process is a week-long recruitment with interviews, social events and networking, which also helps build friendships and support among women.
“This event is pretty fun and heartfelt and a happy workout. It’s a good way for students to relieve their stress and hopefully find sisterhood through that,” said JD Pulgarin-Castillo, senior forensic science investigation major.
Pulgarin-Castillo also mentioned the pilates class is trendy right now and pointed out that it’s easy for all body types. So, one doesn’t have to be super fit or a pro to join in.
“I’m attending [the event] as an attendee. It is a towers event and I attended just so we have more active bursts to show up for the girls,” said Melanie Valenzuela, associate member educator at Gammas. “It was refreshing because I had a slow week, so getting active was fun.”
The Pilates with Gammas event gave Washburn students a chance to get active, meet sorority members and learn more about Greek life in a fun and relaxed setting. With a mix of stretching, Pilates and social time, the event offered something for everyone, no matter their fitness level. Overall, it served as a way to relieve stress, make connections and show the welcoming spirit of the Gammas during recruitment week.
