Soup & Dessert for Days turned the Memorial Union concourse into a mid-semester recharge station, serving hot soup, dessert trays for students to stop by and enjoy. The event was hosted in partnership by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) and the Office of Student Involvement & Development (OSID), a duo that has been busy all semester putting on social, educational, cultural and recreational programs for student involvement.
This semester, CAB and OSID also partnered for CAB Fall Festival on Oct. 1, filling the East Union Lawn with food trucks, pumpkin painting, apple cider, arts and crafts.
CAB offered a lineup that disappeared fast: cheesecake bites, raspberry cheesecake brownies, fruit tarts, truffles and salted chocolate pretzel bites. Serving the table were CAB members.
Deondre Morris, freshman biotechnology major, spoke about the most popular dessert of the day.
“We had raspberry cheesecake brownies. They’re the first favorite of everyone. If I’m being honest, they’re pristine,” Morris said.
Morris also reflected on why CAB chooses to host events for students.
“I believe the idea of this event is to just give back to our students at the school and to keep them encouraged,” Morris said. “Because I’m being honest, being a student, a full-time student especially, is pretty rough. So we just want to keep our students motivated.”
Utsav Poudel, senior computer information science major, who stopped by the dessert table on his way to class, shared his experience.
“I was just walking by, and then I saw people giving out brownies, and I figured I’d grab one on the way to my class,” Poudel said.
Poudel, who has attended other campus activities as well, addressed both CAB’s past events and this one.
“I think it gives us more opportunity to talk to more people and eat foods that we might not have eaten on our own, and also to grab a snack on the way to class and get some more glucose in the blood,” Poudel said.
On the OSID side, student-athletes volunteered to help serve soup: chicken noodle and baked potatoes, which became the crowd favorite. Men’s basketball players Amalachi Wilkins, freshman criminal justice major, and Cole Parker, junior physical education major, ladled soup while chatting with students passing through.
Wilkins explained why he volunteered at the event.
“Just wanted to come help out and show support to the school and show that basketball’s got the school’s back,” Wilkins said.
Wilkins also highlighted the work behind the event and the response it received from students.
“I think the people that prepared this food for us did a very great job,” Wilkins said. “Everybody that kept coming back kept telling us that the chicken noodle soup and the baked potatoes [were] good.”
CAB and OSID will continue hosting events throughout the semester, including OSID’s ongoing “Firebringer” production and CAB’s terrarium-making event planned for early December in the Union concourse.
