Washburn Spanish Club hosted Spanish Immersion Day at Washburn Memorial Union A, uniting students from Vogel, Shawnee and nearby schools for a day of engaging language activities Oct.3 from 9 a.m-2 p.m.
The event gave students from different schools a chance to connect with one another, explore Spanish in fun and meaningful ways and discover that learning a new language can be both exciting and rewarding.
“A lot of the time, kids think that a language is just some words in a book that they need to try to understand and they don’t know that it’s a living culture,” said Georgina Tenny, senior lecturer, modern languages. “Washburn has been hosting this event for four years.”
Tenny’s words reflect what many students discover at the event that Spanish language isn’t just something to study, but they can actually use to connect with others.
“We tried to immerse students in the culture, the students practiced through a role-play activity, where they picked a card with a scenario and created a conversation based on it,” said Grace Claspill, senior psychology major and Spanish club president. “The dances connected to Hispanic culture beyond traditional styles like bachata and cumbia, the students also shared moves from their own experiences, giving others a chance to learn from them.”
Along with the dances, the Spanish Club kept students engaged with food, drinks, music, fun challenges and even a tour of the university to give them a broader experience of campus life.
“We didn’t really learn about cultures. We just really went on the scavenger hunt, had conversations and we learned dances. But, I would have liked to learn a little more about cultures,” said Stella Berry, a participant of the event. “The event would highlight a wider variety of Latin American traditions.”
While the event successfully engaged students through games, conversations and dance, Berry’s feedback led to an opportunity for future Spanish Immersion Days to place greater emphasis on showcasing the richness and diversity of Latin American cultures as well.
The event wrapped up with gift giveaways including chocolates, along with shared food and a group photo to capture the day.
