On Sept. 9, at the Memorial Union, Washburn hosted a unique event involving pigs-in-a-blanket, miniature pigs and energy drinks.
Janel Rutherford, director business and auxiliary services, talked about the purpose of the event.
“The idea with Scorch on the Porch is just to mix up a bit for students to bring fun and activities. So, we usually have music, something fun to give away, or a sample. And the bookstore offers a pop-up sale in the same area,” Rutherford said.
Scorch on the Porch is a part of Washburn’s new Bodventure program, which is intended to help new Washburn students get involved with on-campus activities like clubs.
“So today it was National [When] Pigs Fly Day. They [the Memorial Union] took that theme on with the event, so you had the little pigs,” Rutherford said.
Elliot Weber, building service team member, explained the process of organizing an event stage. “I’ve done stuff like this before,” Weber said. “It’s mainly just setting up tables, getting everything ready for the vendors and catering to set up food. Just getting orders from scheduling and our higher ups in the building.”
Angelina Reid, freshman nursing major, stood in line for free pigs-in-a-blanket.
“I just stopped by because I ended class like ten minutes ago,” Reid said.
The supply of energy drinks and free food opted as an ongoing introduction that Washburn extended to its new students.
