On Monday, Aug. 25, Memorial Union hosted Union Daze in celebration of National Banana Split Day from 11-1 p.m. The event provided free ice cream paired with bananas.
Becky Bolte, director of Memorial Union, describes Union Daze as one of their signature events.
“We do it the second week of classes, three or four days of just free stuff to drive traffic to the Union,” Bolte said. “So everybody knows what we offer here.Today is National Banana Split day and we thought that it would be fun to do our variation of banana splits.”
Shelby Bradbury, senior reservation specialist for university scheduling, described the event as being intended solely for students.

“This event is really just for our students, giving some freebies and getting them excited about the union and just showing them what the union is for them and everything,” Bradbury said.
Richard Chavez, facilities manager of Memorial Union, expressed his emotions regarding the event.
“Usually … it’s funny whenever you give away free food T-shirts or anything like that, a lot of students come out,” Chavez said.
The Memorial Union celebrates Union Daze during the second week of the semester by featuring national fun days. This year, the union marked National Dog Day on Aug. 26 and National Just Because Day on Aug. 27.
