On Friday, May 9, the Washburn Wind Ensemble, the Washburn Chorale and the Washburn Symphony Orchestra held the President’s Concert in White Concert Hall from 7:30-8:45 p.m. The concert featured President JuliAnn Mazachek as the guest. Around 900 spectators were present during this concert.
Raffael Cipriano, conductor and director of orchestra, explains that this concert was prepared differently compared to earlier performances this year.
“The particular thing about this concert, we had a new composition from one of our composition students,” Cipriano said. “So we had to learn a piece that nobody had played before. And so it was, it was a little bit of a challenge, but we did it, and we were happy about how it turned out.”
The concert features a composition by Dylan Rizzo, senior music education major. The Symphony Orchestra gave the world premiere of his piece, ‘Change’.
Lauren Wilson, sophomore cello performance major and cello player, explains the most rewarding part of this concert.
“The most rewarding part was getting that last concert in with some of these seniors,” Wilson said. “It’s been a real privilege to get to work with them, and they’ve been the reason that I want to keep performing. They’re really good motivators.”
Lawrence Abernathy, conductor and director of choirs, describes the most exciting part of the concert.
“The most exciting part of this concert is the variety,” Abernathy said. “We get to showcase all of our ensembles. For me as a musician, it’s always tricky to revisit music and you learn new things every time you revisit a score so that’s where a lot of our growth came from this time.”
Washburn music department is conducting the audition for the students who want to major and minor in music. To schedule an audition or for further information, contact Joseph DeSota, assistant professor of music, at [email protected].
