On April 3 Washburn hosted a Happy Nutrition event organized by Student Health Services during National Nutrition Month from 3-4 p.m.
The Happy Nutrition discussion focused on the importance of balanced nutrition, choosing healthy protein sources and reading nutrition labels carefully. They also reflected the misconceptions around weight loss, emphasizing that fast methods are unhealthy and unsustainable.
“We want to make an impact in our community and get people to a healthier state of being so they could be better and so we empower people through nutrition,” said Anthony Blanco, a nutrition and wellness coach at Herbalife.
The conversation also touched on processes for soul foods, balancing the intake, eating enough for energy without overconsumption like peanut butter, almonds and cashews that can cause macronutrients by accident.
Also, they talked about protein brands like GNC, Complete Nutrition, and vitamin stores, which are in the least regulated industries in the country.
“I’m definitely interested in going to the Happy Nutrition place and checking out my numbers to see what would be better and I think I’ve learned a lot about how much protein I need,” said Carter Johnston, sophomore psychology major.
The representatives spoke on how consistency beats intensity, so no extreme diets. People need to be very specific about gaining or losing weight and then focus on progress, not perfection.
The talk included information about prioritizing nutrient-dense foods that add fiber, rich carbs and vegetables and fruits.
“Nutrition is definitely something that has benefited me as it saves a lot of time, money and is quick and easy. Also, it’s something that I like to do,” said McKenzie McMahon, senior psychology major.
Near the end of the session, attendees discussed nutrition clubs like Happy Place and Soulfire where they can sample nutrients that work for them.
