Washburn University’s volleyball team showed tenacity against No. 5 University of Nebraska-Kearney but ultimately fell in a tight five-set match.
The Ichabods fought back from deficits multiple times, including a strong comeback in the final set, but the Lopers’ efficient offense secured the win.
Chris Herron, head coach, praised his team’s effort.
“It was pretty competitive. We fought all night. I thought our kids, when we were down, kept coming back fighting. We got back in every set—even if we didn’t win,” Herron said.
Taylor Rottinghaus, sophomore libero, recorded 40 digs, tied for the sixth-most in program history. Alex Dvorak, junior middle hitter, and Emery Keebaugh, freshman outside hitter, lead the Ichabod offense with 17 and 14 kills, respectively.
“That’s a good team. They’re number five in the country for a reason. I’m proud of our fight,” Herron said.
Even though Washburn was unable to pull out the victory, Bella Limback, junior outside hitter, was proud of the team’s performance.
“Today’s match was a good, hard fight. We put it all out there. We got down a few times but we fought back every single time. It just shows and defines the love this team has and I’m proud of everyone who played out there and gave their 100% in the game,” Limback said.
After a hard-fought battle against Nebraska-Kearney, Washburn finished with a loss in the final set, giving the Lopers the match victory.
The Ichabods conclude their home schedule Saturday against Fort Hays State for Senior Day.
