The Spanish Club held its bi-weekly meeting in Morgan Hall Oct. 23, from 4-5 p.m. They decorated their office with colorful skeletons to make it look festive for Halloween and homecoming.
Some skeletons were dressed in costumes, while others were placed in funny poses.
Miguel Gonzalez-Abellas, professor of modern languages, described the organization.
“The Spanish Club is a student club here at Washburn that [exists] to reinforce the language and cultural skills that a lot of [Spanish majors and minors], Latino students or even community members participate in. We do several activities… with music and food, and sometimes take field trips” Gonzalez said.
Georgina Tenny, a faculty advisor of the Spanish Club, mentioned how they were setting up for homecoming with various activities.
“We are going to compete for homecoming on the office decoration. So today, that’s what we’re working on. We’re creating pieces or decorating, and also we are just kind of designing the look for the office that we want to create,” Tenny said. “The Spanish Club is all about learning and practicing the language, Spanish, and the many cultures of all the Spanish-speaking countries.”
Lauren Frank, senior Spanish major and club treasurer is in her fifth year with the club and says she enjoys it a lot.
“In this meeting, we are doing some decorations to celebrate the Mexican holiday of Dia de los Muertos. It’s a time to celebrate the dead,” Frank said. “In this club, we like to practice our Spanish and help people who are learning Spanish or who currently already speak Spanish and want to talk and share with other people around campus.
The club spent the meeting decorating for the upcoming homecoming decor competitions.
