On Friday, Sept. 20 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the two-person circus show the Great Dubois performed a free and public event in White Concert Hall.
The event took place during Family Weekend and all ages were welcome to attend. The show included many acts such as juggling, spinning plates, aerial tricks and much more. Members and married couple Michael Dubois and Viktoria Grimmy have been performing together for many years.
Before he met Grimmy, Dubois was a one-man circus act called “The Solo Circus”. He has performed on many shows including the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, “Late Night with David Letterman”, major cruise lines and NBA halftime shows.
Grimmy was born into a multi-generational circus family called “The Grimmy Family Circus”. She has performed in many shows including the Britney Spears World Circus Tour, “Pippin the Musical” on Broadway and the movie “Burlesque” starring Cher and Christina Aguilera.
Together, the duo performs at colleges, theaters, fairs, festivals and many other places all over the world. They even performed in the musical “The Greatest Showman” starring Hugh Jackman. After their performance Friday, the two did a small meet-and-greet to socialize with attendees and take pictures.
Remington Beard-Alvarado, sophomore psychology major, expressed that even though this is her first time attending a Family Weekend event, she enjoyed the performance and was glad to spend time with her loved ones.
“I’m really glad that I got to bring my family with me. I brought my brother and his boyfriend, and I’m just so glad that we got to come out together to see something we all knew that we would like,” Beard-Alvarado said.
Isaiah Bryant-Collier, director of student involvement and development, thought the Great Dubois was perfect for Family Weekend as it gave members of the Washburn and Topeka communities a chance to come together.
“They’re so energetic and so nice and personable, and I thought they would be the perfect fit for our Family Weekend because I’ve really felt like not just our faculty, staff and students but even the Topeka area would love to see the whole stage,” Bryant-Collier said.
