The Washburn University women’s basketball team is excited to start the 2024-25 season after finishing last year with a 13-16 record. Head Coach Lora Westling is feeling positive about the team’s progress and the work being put in behind the scenes.
“I’m really excited about the season,” Westling said. “We have a great group of women who are ready to compete, and they expect a lot from themselves and the program. It’s too early to know exactly where we’ll end up, but I like where we’re headed.”
A key strength for the Ichabods this season will be Yiibari Nwidadah, junior center, who Westling calls “arguably the best post player in the conference.” The team also has strong guard play and more depth this year, which allows them to play faster and bring more energy to games. This added depth gives the Ichabods more options on the court, helping them play the up-tempo style Westling wants to see.
Despite the excitement, the team knows they have a tough road ahead with a very competitive schedule, including exhibition games against the University of Kansas and Kansas State University.
“We have to be ready to go as soon as we start playing,” Westling said. “Our schedule is challenging, and we play some of the top teams twice, but it’s a great way to test ourselves early and see where we stand.”
Nwidadah is focused on becoming more consistent and taking on a bigger leadership role.
“I want to be more assertive on the court and help guide my teammates,” Nwidadah said.
She’s motivated by the feeling that there’s still so much more she can achieve and is determined not to waste any time in reaching her goals.
As the Ichabods prepare for the season, Westling emphasizes the importance of fan support.
“We’re working hard to put on a good show for our fans,” Westling said. “We just ask people to come to the games with enthusiasm.”
With a strong team and a supportive community, the Ichabods are ready to make their mark this season.
“Watching the Washburn women’s basketball team play is such an exhilarating experience,” said Ava Kopecky, sophomore radiologic technology major. “Their energy, teamwork and determination on the court are truly inspiring. I’m looking forward to going to their games this season and hopefully their dedication reflects on the scoreboard.”
The Ichabods are set to tip off against Kansas State University Oct. 30 for the first exhibition game of the season.
