Students gathered at the Memorial Union Wednesday, Sept. 4, for a crafting session designed to provide a creative escape from their rigorous schedules.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the event featured a blend of music, the clacking of ornaments and animated chatter as students engaged in making keychains and friendship bracelets. The atmosphere was further enhanced with Dole Whip, generously provided by Pineapple Dream.
Participants rotated in and out of the crafting stations, creating jewelry and taking breaks between classes. The initiative aimed to offer a moment of relaxation and stress relief amidst the busy academic calendar. Many who stopped by left with a small treasure they made themselves.
The Campus Activities Board or CAB frequently hosts events in the union to maximize student engagement during peak times. Christina Bailey is a CAB member and a junior forensic investigations major, she and her teammates manned the table, introducing the event and handing out the frozen treat.
“The purpose was for students to have fun and take a break from their classes,” Bailey said. “11 to 1 is a busy time for the union, so we like to have events where students can stop by.”
Many attendees crafted gifts for loved ones, a gesture that seemed to lighten their spirits. Emma Simpson, junior interdisciplinary student, shared her enthusiasm for the event.
“I was just walking past with some friends, saw the ice cream and then noticed the bracelets. I was drawn to the table,” Simpson said.
Kory McFan, freshman criminal justice major, echoed the sentiment, noting his appreciation for the variety of activities that CAB offers.
“I like doing these different activities all the time,” McFan said, reflecting on his participation in previous events, including making flowers from recycled cans and Valentine’s cards.
For those interested in upcoming activities, more information can be found on the CAB website.
