WBSU holds multiple types of events every year. They partnered with other organizations at Washburn to provide many valuable events to the community, such as “Don’t Touch My Hair”, “Spring Fling”, “Decolonize Your Mind” and more.

The annual Black Excellence Ball is a dance to celebrate the Washburn Community Black History Month. The ball was held in the Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center on March 29.

The night theme is “The Princess and the Frog.” Students attended dressed in fancy attire rather than their normal casual clothes.

There is a $5 entrance fee for non-Washburn students. Students needed to show their Washburn ID before to enter the Excellence Ball to be a free participant.

The Ball is open to the whole community to participate. Washburn students were allowed to invite their friends from Washburn and outside the university.

WBSU is a student group whose mission is to develop independent, responsible and optimistic young adults at Washburn University and surrounding communities. This was the fifth event hosted by the Washburn Black Student Union as part of their Culture Week.

The Black Excellence Ball serves Washburn students and the Topeka community with a DJ, snacks and a vibrant atmosphere. JoAnna Marks, diversity, equity and inclusion director of WSGA, came to the Ball to dance and have fun with her friends.

WBSU has weekly meetings on Monday in the LLC Blair Room from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Students involved have done volunteer/community services throughout the Washburn and Topeka community.

Deandre Harvey, junior integrated studies major, is also a member of the Washburn Black Student Union. Harvey also participated in the Black Excellence Ball promotion at the beginning of Culture Week.
