Washburn had a close game against the Missouri Southern State Lions on Thursday, Sept. 7 in Yager Stadium with a score of 23 – 30.
D.J. Bell, freshman running back and business major, made a significant play in the game, catching a 36-yard pass during the first quarter, and scoring a 100-yard touchdown during the third quarter.
“It felt awesome running that big touchdown, and having that big touchdown be at home felt amazing,” Bell said, “it felt just like high school out there.”
Kellen Simoncic, a business major and starting quarterback, kept making plays to keep the score close, ending the first half with a score of 13-7.
The Lions came back during the third quarter with two touchdowns before Bell made the comeback touchdown leaving the score 20-23.
Bell’s play had the crowd in an uproar, with them cheering Bell on as he scored the touchdown. The team fought hard to stay in the game.
Trenton Brehm, a junior kinesiology major and kicker, tied up the game during the fourth quarter. The Ichabods fought hard to try to get one last score after the Lions scored a touchdown.
With 22 seconds left in the game, the Lions intercepted a potential touchdown to keep the lead.
“We made a nice drive at the end and they came up with a big play, and we also had some young guys really step up and some other guys making some good plays,” said Craig Schurig, Washburn head coach.
Despite the fantastic plays from the players, the game unfortunately ended in a loss, coming down to an interception made by Missouri at the touchdown line, during the last few seconds of the fourth quarter.
The Ichobods take on Lincoln University of Missouri Saturday Sept. 16 in Jefferson City, Missouri at 6 p.m.
