On Wednesday, Aug. 30, Washburn Student Government Association, held the first of many meetings for the 2023 fall semester. Although the meeting was quite brief, there were some notable discussions and even an a new face added to the overall senate.
“It means a lot to be a part of WSGA,” said Tiana Smith, sophomore mass media major.
Smith was inducted as a new senator during the meeting, but being involved on campus is nothing new to her. She spent her summer on campus as a student orientation counselor.
“Our motto is students serving students and that’s what we do,” Smith said.
WSGA president and third year allied health and medical major, Antonio Martinez, also touched on the annual events that Washburn hosted in its first weeks of class.
“We were really ecstatic with how WU Fest went,” Martinez said. “We feel like it’s gonna be a great year for student organizations on our campus and so we’re excited to see where that goes.”
Members of the cabinet also gave reports on some upcoming events for student organizations, including the Black Student Union’s car wash fundraiser on Sept. 9, the Can Emporia food drive on Oct. 14, and a new bowling club that was created last fall semester.
“We’ll be having our first fundraiser on September 9th,” said JoAanna Marks, diversity and inclusion director of WSGA and BSU secretary. “Come get your car washed for $5. If you don’t got a car, we’ll wash your bike for three [dollars]. And if you don’t have a bike, we’ll wash you for a dollar [laughter].”
Sierra Jeter, fourth-year political science and Spanish major as well as the WSGA health and wellness director, reported on some new additions around campus. Jeter stated that there are free pregnancy tests in the Memorial Union bathrooms as well as upcoming HIV tests, flu shots and skin screenings in the coming months.
WSGA meetings are open to all students, so feel free to attend their next meeting on Sept. 13 to get the full idea of how WSGA is working to improve campus.
